Bartender MEET

MEET: ALEX JUMP, BAR MANAGER, DEATH & CO DENVER

She's a top bartender with sky-high goals who tells it like it is. Meet Alex Jump from Denver's, Death & Co.

Name: Alex Jump

Role: Bar Manager

Venue: Death & Co Denver

City: Denver

We catch-up with Alex Jump from the infamous Death & Co

MY BACKGROUND

My parents moved to Chattanooga, TN when I was 4 years old. They aren’t Southern, so they like to say that I’m “Southerner by Accident…” I grew up through the food & beverage industry in Chattanooga, and made a lot of friends in neighboring cities like Nashville, Atlanta, and Birmingham. I studied Religion & Classics in college & fell in love with the bar about 1 semester before graduating.

TIME ON THE TOOLS

I’ve been working in the hospitality industry for about 8 years now. I started as a hostess at 19 and moved behind the bar right after I turned 21. I was working in a small market, so by the time I was 24 I was managing two bars in my hometown. I moved to Denver two years ago with the hopes of getting the job I have now, which is the Bar Manager for Death & Co Denver.

GREATEST HIGHLIGHTS

Participating in Speed Rack in 2016 & 2017 and winning the Southwest regionals in 2017. Being hired on the team at Death & Co and being featured as Punch’s February 2019 Bartender in Residence.

I’D LIKE TO SEE MORE OF…

An emphasis on industry health & wellness. I think one of the things I would like to see actually CHANGE the most is brands re-allocating some of the marketing money that they spend on making POS like clothes & other things they give away and instead re-allocate that money to investing in Service Professional health. Brands truly underestimate the value that can come from taking care of the people that sell their products. We don’t need another brand t-shirt. We need health insurance & mental health providers and people teaching us about how to stay healthy while working in this industry.

MY ADVICE

Believing in yourself is the first step in achieving your dreams. Anything is possible if you set goals for yourself and work every day towards them. Write down what you want & then go get it.

MY GOALS

I’d like to live in London in the next 4 years. I’d like to continue to grow with the Death & Co family, and I’d like to become a certified yoga instructor. Other than that, there are some competitions I’d like to participate in & win in the next couple of years.

TOP 3 FAVES

OH. That’s really hard to narrow down…. I’d say 3 of my most favorite bars/restaurants are:

  • 1. Robert’s Western World, Nashville, TN.
  • 2. Ticonderoga Club, Atlanta, GA.
  • 3. Hop Alley, Denver, CO.
